Some thoughts:
- Oda Nobunaga always thought outside the box and came up with plans and strategies that allowed him to win against larger forces
- Oda Nobunaga was intolerant to other costumes (eg: Buddhism) and disrespected people (eg: one of his own generals Mitsuhide). This led to constant tensions and even betrayal. Contrast this to how Alexander assimilated and consolidated power (ie, respecting and embracing other costumes, and remembering the name of his soldiers).
- Hideyoshi avenged the death of his warlord and seized the opportunity to take his place.
- His wife was also a very important element to his success, ensuring internal affairs at his estate were in order. She was intelligent and down to earth.
- Hideyoshi being a commoner and having no legitimacy to power, sought out and likely pressured the court so find a solution. He was "luckily" found to have royal ancestry after all.
- Hideyoshi in order to stabilize and consolidate his own power and position produced legislation to order a sword hunt, basically disarming all commoners and removing the risk of rebellion. The irony is that he had been a commoner himself, so he is basically closing the door after he himself acquired power. His second major decree was to outlaw conflict between damiyos, being him the only one who could wage war.
- Hideyoshi forced his enemies to either swear allegiance and come to his aid, or to fight. He forces them to sit down at the table and agree to cease hostilities.
- For the first time in 120 years all of Japan is ruled by one warlord. Through his daring use of violence, politics, and diplomacy, Hideyoshi, a man born a peasant climbed to the very peak of power.
- Hideyoshi, like Hitler, went mad with conquering the world, and refused to hear bad news. Those two things led to catastrophic results and his demise.
- To protect his young son's life until he becomes an adult, Hideyoshi appoints a council of elders, constituted by the five most powerful leaders across Japan, to look after his well being. Some are people he trusts, others are people that are powerful, all they all have competing interests, ensuring no one of them will be able to top another.
- It doesn't matter if you have a good winning strategy if you're disliked by peers that you depend on, such as was the case for Ishida Mitsunari. He had planted those seeds of resentment in the past when he had negatively classified the performance of those peers during a military enterprise. He defected to Tokugawa. However that betrayal meant he could never be trusted again and he died in misery.
- By ensuring his lineage and shifting the policies from war to peace (eg: focusing on honor and duty instead of violence), Tokugawa was able to bring peace to Japan that lasted for 250 years.
