it is insufferably preachy and while the message may be well intentioned, it is obnoxiously heavy-handed. i have no idea why they focused so heavily on the genetic modification as the biggest issue instead of the fact that okja and the "superpigs" (awful name by the way) are clearly very intelligent. the dilemma about the necessity to breed and probably mistreat a very intelligent creature in order to feed the world would be much more interesting. i don't need to be told that mega-corporations are evil, i already know that. all of our foods are already gmos, that isn't a shocking twist, to... read more

could have been a simple and very effective movie but there's so much fat in the form of characters that didn't need to be there which clouds the overall message and the impact that mija and okja's relationship could have had. jake gyllenhaal channeling rip taylor is fucking ludicrous. read more

first of all, let me say that i'm a meat eater and i really enjoy eating meat. so i didn't expect to enjoy this one, but... i really found so many this that i loved such as: 1 - director of the movie (bong joon-ho) continues to make a really good worth-watching films after his last fantastic dystonian movie (snowpiercer) 2 - this movie besides gone girl introduces the press propaganda and how shows usually deceives us. 3 - the gorgeous soundtrack that hits you right in the face in the right moment, and mostly it is recognizable. but there is issues that didn't fit me, maybe... of course read more

during the first half i thought this would be the type of film you can watch, be decently entertained, and then never think about ever again. during the second half, however, things get kind of serious. the film still keeps its comedic tone but there's some unexpectedly dark scenes that will make it a bit harder to call this 'forgettable'. jake gyllenhaal, tilda swinton, giancarlo esposito and paul dano are in this and they're all great. and ahn seo-hyun, who i'm guessing almost nobody knew before this, is also amazing. unfortunately, the performances are all that i can really call great. read more

A young Korean girl tries to save Okja, a genetically engineered giant pig she has grown up with, from being slaughtered and sold as steaks by a behemoth food multination. Endearing and dynamic family adventure finds an easy target in corporate greed and in the animal cruelty of the food industry but works its way to a poignant, hardly comforting conclusion. The world can't be saved as a whole: all one can do is try and save it one person - or one piglet - at a time. If you watch this with kids, be aware some scenes are way more intense than you'd expect from your average Disney fare. read more

Okja is the name of a genetically modified ;super pig' which was developed in a laboratory of the Mirando Corporation with the aim of producing a new mass-market breed of pig with a low carbon footprint to help solve a world shortage of food. Okja was one of 26 pigs that was sent out to farmers across the globe for a 10 year period as part of a competition to see who could grow the largest.
