magical realism french-fairytale-style. brilliant effects, especially the thick underbrush and snowy fog. the acting may be stilted, but once the audience chooses to switch to 'suspension of disbelief' mode, it becomes quite a mystical ride. my only problem was hearing all the disney themes playing in my head throughout the whole show, but that's no fault of this rather different live-action superior rendition (& rendering). read more

i truly wanted to like it more than i did. a non-disneyfied version? with lea seydoux? yes, please. no. there is not the least attempt to tell a story beyond the bare bones of the fairy tale. i'm sad to admit that the disney version at least ends up being not just less stockholm syndrome-y, but also more sane. in this one, belle arguably falls for the dream!dude (literally) but what about the beast's feelings for her? why, when? the whole thing makes no sense at all. at least it's very pretty. very pretty - though cgi-ed to the gills. nice action scenes too. but the story is hollow, hollow.... read more
