how could you not be excited about tomorrowland? shrouded in secrecy and directed by brad bird, director of the incredibles, mission impossible: ghost protocol, the iron giant and ratatouille. the first teaser was awesome and in the year of 2015 a breath of fresh air and originality was surely needed.
so then a week before it came out teh reviews flooded in and it didn't look good. but i went anyways and i can tell you that i was very disappointed. this is a film that i had high hopes for, despite reviews and thought i would still like it and even recommend it. nope, neither of those two can be accounted for in regards to this film.
now it does look amazing, it does have amazing effects and out of this world cinematography and the acting is pretty good from the leads, especially the youngen named raffey cassidy who blows everyone else away. it is these that bring the percentage score of this film much higher than it deserves because nothing else works here.
where to begin. ummm... it's cheesy and overlong and the whole ending doesn't work. it's story starts in the 60's and it does a good job replicating the corny disney-ish feel of the 60's but it feels a little off. then it jumps to today and that cheesy vibe stays with us and only gets worse when the whole 'reveal' is laid out for us complete with a hammy bad guy speech that really makes no sense.
and the music; oh god the music! while the music is epic and fantastic on it's own, set to the film it just doesn't work. right from the beginning we have this epic score set to the actions of the film and totally taking us out of what should be an exciting discovery and set up. instead of mystery and intrigue that the music needs to be we get overblown epic adventure as if we have followed these characters on an arc and we are at the end of said arc.
and then there is the bad guy androids who act like bad actors. maybe intentional but still it didn't work. and the length? why over two hours? lest i forget the whole basis of the film, the idea of the film, the message it tries to sell us. i won't say it for spoiler reasons but i will say it just didn't work.
i will say there are some cool moments, some good action and some touching scenes but it's scattered amongst a bunch of other stuff that really is senseless, pointless and most of all cheesy. brad bird is a director that has done no wrong, until now. let's hope this is his only misstep or perhaps he will go the route of neill blomkamp who showed so much promise and continues to not deliver.
the best thing to say about this film is:
tomorrowland is like brad bird channeling j.j. abrams who is channeling steven spielberg.
the worst thing to say about this film is:
tomorrowland is the biggest disappointment of the year and a far cry from a good film.
